On voyait, jadis, la télévision en famille, on la regarde aujourd'hui chacun pour soi. Le travail était standardisé, rigide, il est devenu polyvalent, flexible. Les institutions étaient paternalistes, autoritaires; elles sont devenues permissives, voire libérales. Un sentiment d'unité habitait le monde, c'est celui d'insécurité qui domine. D'aucuns dénoncent le "capital financier", laissant intacte la question de savoir comment, pourquoi ce mauvais génie est sorti de sa bouteille. D'autres incriminent la "fin du travail", tombeau d'une civilisation capitaliste emportée par son propre productivisme. D'autres enfin s'en remettent à une explication purement culturelle, l'âge de l'individualisme, qui expliquerait à elle seule la tentation néolibérale. Chacune de ces théories désigne un aspect du problème, mais aucune ne peut expliquer la force du renversement à l'œuvre. Pour trouver le sens caché de notre époque, il faut rien moins que les affronter toutes. Non pas "fin du travail" mais "travail sans fin", parfois jusqu'à l'épuisement psychique. Non pas fin des valeurs, mais fin des relais (la "première chaîne", la famille. ) qui les soudaient auparavant aux valeurs privées. Ère, enfin et surtout, non pas du capital financier mais du "capital humain" tout juste commencée, par quoi "nos" temps modernes peuvent trouver une signification qui les porte.
